Thing 8: Wikis

What did you find interesting about the wiki concept?
I definetly like how easy it is to change things, before this 'Thing' I only knew of WikiHow and Wikipidea. I think that this was really interesting because I never knew much about them, I actually never knew you could create your own. So when I watched the video and realized I could use a wiki for my personal use I thought it would be interesting.

What types of applications within schools and professional organizations might work well with a wiki?
I think that a professional organization could use a wiki when they are planning a business trip and they need to share information. I also think that schools could use them as a research source, IF it was somehow checked to make reliable.

Many teachers/faculty 'ban' Wikipedia as a source for student research. What do you think of the practice of limiting information by format?
I think that it should be allowed, but on certain understanding terms. For example, if I can't find any information on my research topic and I find some information on a Wiki, I feel like I should be able to use it. I guess everyone should use their own judgement and be reasonable. Idk, I guess it's a touchy topic because I see both sides of the issue.

Which wiki did you edit?
I decided to edit 'http://www.wikihow.com/Survive-a-Freestyle-Rap-Battle#Steps' in this WikiHow I added ' *Note- Some rapper's don't write everything down, they keep everything in their head so that they can only talk about what's 'real'. For example Dwayne Carter bka Lil Wayne'.

Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin IV or Physical Graffiti and why?
I'm 19 and have no idea of who you're talking about. But my mom say's their a band. I'm pretty sure I've heard of them..maybe.

Thing 7: Online Collaboration Tools

Which of these tools is easier for you to use?
I decided to use Google Docs because it seemed like it was something I would be able to understand.

How do the features of each compare?
I looked around and I was first going to go with the Dropbox program and changed my mind, this is because it didn't really make sense to me. So instead I decided to go for the Google Doc's instead.

Does one have features that would make you choose it over the other?
I see that ZOHO writter has the Google Doc's features, so that's kind of nice. ZOHO writter also includes a chat box, which could come in use if I ever needed instead help and needed an answer 'right now'. So knowing that, I change my mind to ZOHO writter.
What would the Founding Fathers think of these tools?
They would be screaming inside 'OMG, OMG, OMG, NO FREEEEAKING WAY." Because that's kind of what I did after I completed Thing 2.

Would the final draft of the 'Declaration of Independence' have been better had these tools been at their disposal? Hmmm, I wonder...
Is this really a question?

Thing 6: Digg, Reddit...[et al].

1. How can you use Digg to collect research for your next report or design project?
I can use Digg to recommend sources or if my audience want's more information I can say "Well, this is a really great source here, it had five stars". Another way I could use Digg as a research source would be combining Digg with the RSS Feed (Net Vibes).

2. How can you use Digg to establish your reputation and credibility?
When other's see what I have gathered when they look at my archive, and what I rate highest they may agree with me and think to themselves that I have good judgement and that would raise my reputation. I would establish my credibility when others look at what I have rated and when they agree with my ratings.

3. How can you connect your other social media circles to Digg and increase your popularity?
You can link other sites to Digg so you not only increase your popularity, but you would have everything all in one place if you were to link Digg to your Net Vibes page and everything would be a lot more convenient.

4. Reddit is using Twitter. Discuss what combining the experience means to you in terms of saving your oh so 'precious time'?
I think this is interesting and convenient. Kind of what I said in question #3. It's convenient and that obviously saves my 'precious time' but I also think it is usefull in that if I were blogging in twitter then I could refer to something in Digg and it would combine all together (link).

5. How can you ensure that information on an open source website like Reddit is credible?
Ummmm it's called 'SOURCES' and 'BIBLIOGRAPHY'. =]

6. Who's crazier; old shaggy-haired Kate or the 'new' Kate with the 80's sk8er punk haircut?

hahaaaa! Kate kind of reminds me of myself, well in the 'mommy' aspect. Idk if that's good or bad.

7. Have you ever seen a photograph of Jon Gosselin when he wasn't wearing an Ed Hardy shirt? Is that all he owns or what?
It's cause he thinks he's a 'balla, shot calla, 20 inch blades on the impala!, a calla gettin laid tonight"

Thing 5

1. Which social journal did you choose? Why?

I ended up using Purk because when I tried to use twitter it wouldn't connect for me. For what I have experienced to far, it seems like I would use this for more of a personal use instead of a public use.

2. What is unique about the online journaling experience?

I think the fact that
a personal can make their blogs private or public is really important because if I wanted to blog about my
personal information then I definitely wouldn't want i out in the open.

3. Can you see this having some application to school work or professional development?
Yes and No, I think it depends on the company. I don't think that this should be any type of application in school work unless it is for an english class because what I want to write about is usually personal and nobody's business but my own.

4. What are some ways that these tools could be used for evil, instead of good?
I think that these tools could be evil because a personal could write things on their blog intentionally to get the attention of another's to piss them off. & that could be evil.

Thing 4: Social Media

1. Now that you have a profile on Facebook or MySpace, how will you share information about yourself to meet other students at Ai and start to build your network?

I already had a Facebook and a MySpace, but I have recently only been using Facebook. This is because Myspace is so outdated and I feel like it isn't as professional as Facebook. Yet, MySpace does have more of a design aspect to it, and I like that. With that said, I have already added the Facebook Ai Alliance and other group members and that has aolready built a small network.

2. Keeping in mind that employers use social networks as a recruiting tool, how will you use Facebook or MySpace to promote yourself to potential employers?

I never put anything crazy on my Facebook because that's stupid. Why would I want to promote myself as a crazy party girl, a. when I'm not and b. when I know my future employers can easily look at this and judge me off of it. I will use Facebook to promote myself as a well maintained, professional women.

3. How will you use Facebook or MySpace to build your professional network?
I will use Facebook by finding company's that may be in need of an employee or also, the more (professional) people I am in contact with, the more likely I am to conquire what I am looking for.

4. What interests and personal details will you share with your circle?

I feel like as long as I put myself out there to be who I am I wont have a problem. I think that I have good enough judgement to know what is, and is not appropriate for the web, knowing that anyone is accesable to it. I unclude, my child, and my inspirations the most.

5. How is professional networking different from social networking?

I'm glad this question came up because I wanted to comment on it, but I wasn't really sure where it would go... I think that in my case, I use MySpace more for social networking because I have more than 1,000 friends on there, some designers, some friends etc. But either way it's simply for socializing. As were when I'm using Facebook I try to keep everything professional because I feel like it is more of a proffesional networking system.

Social Networking = Socializing

Proffesional Networking = Proffesionalism

Thing 03: Online Communication

1. What about My Ai Campus.com seems interesting or useful to you?

I like how everything is in one place. I can go to my online class, e-mail, grades, anything right from the aicampus website. It is night and convenient for me!

2. Why is this such a great resource for students here at Ai?

I think this is a great resource because in my first through fourth quarter I was so confused. I didn't understand where to go for what or what needed to be done by when in anything. Wether it was registration, assignments, whatever... so I really like how everything is right there because there are always important updates.

3. What specific resources do you find useful or helpful?

I especially use the e-mail and I also go to myaicampus.com to go to my online courses because the online course website sometimes doesn't let me log in. So I always think.. 'if all fails, theres always myaicampus'

4. Did you have any problems accessing your student portal account or other services in this Thing? If you say 'no' you're either a liar or you did something wrong. Do it again!

umm... not that I know of... hmmm. let me try again. No, it works? But I have had problems in the past. They were easily fixable though. =]

-I don't have any special mail that needed to be forwarded. Sooo I didn't need to do the forwarding process!

Thing 02

For thing 2, I had to set up an RSS feed reader.
I decided to use NetVibes instead. I found this the easiest to use and follow.I am really excited that I was introduces to this whole Thing 2 experiance because before it, I had no idea what the heck an RSS feed reader was. I'm glad it is something that I will be using in the future instead of just a one time thing. Thanks Tim! =]

I think that this should be introduced as a requirment in a computer applications class. I think that if I would have known about this and what it was sooner, things would have been a lot more clear and easier to do because everything would be all in one place.

I ended up using the bar at the top of the Net Vibes site to add my feeds because I could search within Net Vibes to look for the certain types of feeds I wanted on my Portal.

My Net Vibes URL is :
netvibes.com/joscilynk

A screen shot of my some feeds I follow:
